DR. SATAN'S SHRIEKS IN THE NIGHT! SHOW.
It was originally purchased in Los Angeles, CA. 15 years ago, already restored & protected on heavy LINEN.

Poster is a huge 40 inches by 60 inches, linen-backed (linen extending about 1/4 inch beyond poster edges for proper framing). Printed by GLOBE POSTER - BALTIMORE as pictured on the bottom edge of this poster. I've never seen any auction house date these with an exact year of printing, since these were distributed for traveling local shows, that may have been presented live, on-stage over several years time. Safe to say these were printed in the late 1950's to early 1960's with the featured mention of Marilyn Monroe & Elvis Presley.

A ghoulish combination of spooky fun and innovation, spook shows like
Dr. Satan's Shrieks in the Night
upped the horror ante when it came to providing audiences with a good scare. Normally made of three segments with a séance and magic show, a "black out" session where ghosts and monsters would materialize out of thin air to terrorize theatre-goers, and ending with any number of campy horror flicks. Promising phantom apparitions of Elvis Presley and a scantily-clad Marilyn Monroe, both summoned by a reanimate Vincent Van Gogh, this Heritage first would be a great opportunity for any fan of horror or 1960s camp.
Restoration has addressed a few of the folds and Touchup has been applied to the folds. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

You're actually surrounded by a horror horde of nightmare creatures!"; "All on stage! Right before you eyes!"; "SEE slave maidens at the mercy of hideous beasts! SEE Dead Painter Van Gogh materialize"; "The ethereal form of Elvis Presley and the posing apparition of Marilyn Monroe [Re-enacting famous Pin-up pose]"; "FREE [in addition to everything else] so that you'll always remember!"; "To boys: Large spirit portrait of Marilyn Monroe [famous pin-up pose]"; "To girls: Large spirit portrait of Elvis Presley"; "Plus Horror Movie!"). The spook shows advertised by this poster were produced by Joe Karston and were performed by magicians that he employed such as Wayne Harris, Kirk Kirkham, Harry Wise, John Daniels and Johnny Cates. Spook shows started in the 1930s, and continued into the late 1960s, with their greatest prominence in the late 1940s and 1950s. Local theaters would book three to five low budget movies, and then advertise them as a late night "spook show". Often they would have "live" acts on stage (sometimes famous actors who had appeared in monster movies would appear on stage in full make up, and sometimes it would be local actors dressed as monsters), and often the posters would make outrageous promises (sometimes they might say a person would be beheaded on stage, etc!).
Not many of these spook show posters survive (almost all the known surviving ones are window cards, most of which are smaller 14" x 22", and some of which are 22" x 28", and the shows certainly had very limited runs). The few "spook show" window cards that DO survive are rarely in even "very good" condition. This LARGE 40 by 60 inch Poster is in EXCELLENT Fine to Very Fine condition for a collector to enjoy for years to come!
